Agrigento is a superb example of the splendour of one of the most important Greek colonies in the West. The ancient city extended over a vast area, and is now known as the Valley of Temples due to the large number of religious buildings that preserve and testify to the wealth and cultural development of the period up until the 4th century AD. Still surrounded by marvellous natural scenery, it was the centre of activity and a source of inspiration for poets and philosophers like Pindar and Empedocles.
Motivation given by UNESCO for making the Valley of Temple a World Heritage Site (1997)
